back on campus

great horned, originally uploaded by Sophie_vf.

on my "must get out of the lab or lose my mind" walk today, I found that the great horned owls had returned to their nests on campus. The light was really harsh this evening - I'll probably try to get better pictures later this week.

Here's how they looked last year - pretty much the same.

Great horned owls nested on my university campus a couple of years ago, and I am used to hearing them hooting off and on during the winter months. I think that they nested here again this year; I walked by the old nesting place about a week ago and spotted an adult and a juvenile in the branches. Great photo - yours turned out better than mine did!

thanks - I have not heard these hooting, unfortunately. Amazing how well adapted they are to people, these guys let you get quite close to them and just stare at you.
